About Grand Seiko

Grand Seiko began in 1960, when Seiko set out to build a watch that could match the best Swiss pieces for accuracy and finish. Since 2017 it has been presented as a brand in its own right. Its watches are made in Japan in its own studios, with an emphasis on precision, sharp cases polished with the Zaratsu technique, and dials inspired by Japanese nature and seasons.

Grand Seiko uses three types of movement: mechanical (calibers 9S and 9SA), quartz (9F) and Spring Drive (9R and 9RA), a hybrid of a mainspring with electronic regulation and a smoothly gliding seconds hand. The catalog includes the current Heritage, Evolution 9, Elegance, Sport and Masterpiece collections, the older Mechanical, Quartz and Spring Drive groupings, and vintage models from the 1960s and 1970s.

In modern references the fourth letter usually signals the movement, for example A for automatic Spring Drive, H for high-beat mechanical, W for hand-wound and X for quartz, while SLG references belong to the newer generation. Many dials are named after nature themes, such as the well-known Snowflake. Dealers should check the sharp case edges for over-polishing, and expect buyers to value limited editions and the full set.
