Submariner Date, white gold, blue dial.

Smurf, explained

'Smurf' is the nickname for the Rolex Submariner Date 116619LB in 18k white gold, made from 2008 to 2020, with a bright blue dial and a blue ceramic bezel, named after the blue cartoon characters. It uses the 40 mm 'Super Case' and caliber 3135. Because it is solid white gold, it looks much like a steel Submariner at a glance but feels considerably heavier on the wrist.

The 116619LB was replaced in 2020 by the 126619LB, which kept the white gold case and blue bezel but switched to a black dial, a version nicknamed the 'Cookie Monster'. That makes the Smurf a recognised discontinued reference, and buyers who want the blue dial have to look on the secondary market. When buying, check the condition of the dial and bezel, wear on the white gold case and bracelet, since gold marks more easily than steel, whether the case has been polished, and whether the set is complete.

Example: 'Smurf 116619LB, 2015, full set, never polished.'
