Nicknames

What does “Kermit” mean?

Submariner Date with a green bezel (126610LV is also called "Starbucks").

Kermit, explained

'Kermit' is the nickname for the Rolex Submariner Date 16610LV, introduced in 2003 to mark the Submariner's 50th anniversary. It combined a black dial with a green aluminium bezel insert, named after the green puppet. It was replaced in 2010 by the 116610LV 'Hulk'.

Several variations matter to collectors. Early examples have a bezel insert on which the '4' of the 40-minute mark has a flat top, known as the 'Flat 4', and these are particularly sought after. Later production received the 'Maxi' dial with larger hour markers. Because the insert is aluminium, check its colour and wear, and confirm it is original to the watch, as replacement inserts are common. The newer 126610LV, with a black dial and green ceramic bezel, is sometimes also called the Kermit (or 'Cermit'), as well as the 'Starbucks', so check the reference whenever someone uses the name.

Example: 'Kermit 16610LV, Flat 4 insert, 2004, box and papers.'
