What does “Jumbo” mean?
AP Royal Oak 39mm.
Jumbo, explained
'Jumbo' is the name collectors use for the 39 mm extra-thin Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, the size and style of the original Royal Oak designed by Gérald Genta and launched in 1972 as reference 5402ST. It was called 'Jumbo' because 39 mm was large for a men's watch at the time. The line continued through references such as the 14802 and 15002, then the long-running 15202, and in 2022 the 16202 with the new caliber 7121, for the Royal Oak's 50th anniversary.
The Jumbo is remarkably thin for an automatic, which is a big part of its appeal, and the blue 'Petite Tapisserie' patterned dial is the classic look. Dealers compare the 15202, with the older thin caliber 2121, and the 16202, with caliber 7121, on movement and dial details, so the reference must be clear in any listing. Steel Jumbos have long been hard to buy new. The condition of the integrated bracelet and how carefully the case's brushed and polished surfaces have been maintained matter greatly, because poor polishing is easy to spot on this design.
Example: 'AP 15202ST Jumbo, blue dial, 2017, full set, unpolished.'
