Deepsea, blue-to-black dial.
James Cameron, explained
'James Cameron' is the nickname for the Rolex Deepsea with a 'D-blue' dial, which fades from bright blue at the top to black at the bottom, with the word 'DEEPSEA' printed in green. Rolex introduced it in 2014 on reference 116660 to mark film director James Cameron's 2012 solo dive to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, during which an experimental Rolex Deepsea Challenge watch was attached to the outside of his submersible. The dial continued on the 126660, introduced in 2018 with caliber 3235.
The Deepsea is a large, heavy dive watch rated to 3,900 metres, with Rolex's Ringlock case construction and a helium escape valve, so it appeals to buyers who want a bold tool watch. The D-blue dial is its most recognisable version. Dealers state the reference because the two generations differ in movement and in case and bracelet details. Check the gradient for even colour, the dial and bezel for damage, and the completeness of the set.
Example: 'Deepsea James Cameron 126660, 2021, full set, never polished.'
