Rolex reference codes

What does “CHNR” mean?

Brown/black bezel ("Root Beer").

CHNR, explained

CHNR is the Rolex suffix for a brown and black bezel. It is usually read as 'chocolat noir', following Rolex's habit of French colour codes, and it marks the bezels collectors call 'Root Beer'. The suffix appears on the GMT-Master II 126711CHNR in Everose Rolesor (steel and Everose gold) and the 126715CHNR in 18k Everose gold, both introduced in 2018 with two-colour Cerachrom bezels.

The two references look similar but differ greatly in gold content, weight and value, so dealers always give the full number. Older 'Root Beer' GMT-Masters from the 1970s, with brown aluminium inserts, don't carry the CHNR suffix. In photos, brown ceramic can look darker or warmer depending on the light, so buyers often ask for pictures in daylight. Check the gold parts of the case and bracelet for wear, since Everose gold marks more easily than steel.

Example: '126711CHNR Root Beer, 2020, full set, light wear.'
