What does “Reference” mean?
The brand's model number for a specific configuration.
Also written as: Ref, Ref number
Reference, explained
A reference, or ref, is the brand's model number for a specific configuration of a watch. It identifies the model and, often, details such as the case material, bezel and dial options. Rolex references are a good example: in 126610LN, the leading digits indicate the generation and model family, the last digit before the letters indicates the metal (0 for steel), and the letters describe the bezel.
The reference is the starting point for any pricing or search, because watches that look alike can be different references with very different values. Many brands add further codes for dial and bracelet variants: Rolex uses a four-digit suffix after a dash, Patek Philippe a dial code after the main reference. Always quote the full reference and check it against both the watch and the papers. On Rolex watches the reference is engraved on the case between the lugs; other brands often put it on the case back.
Example: 'Ref 126610LN, 2024, full set.'
