About Cartier

Cartier was founded in Paris in 1847 by Louis-François Cartier as a jewellery house. His grandsons Louis, Pierre and Jacques turned it into an international business, and Louis Cartier made it a pioneer of the wristwatch: the Santos of 1904, designed for the aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, was one of the first men's wristwatches, and the Tank followed in 1917.

The catalog covers Cartier's main shapes: the Tank and Santos families, the Ballon Bleu, Panthère, Pasha, Ronde, Drive, Clé and Caliber de Cartier, the Baignoire and Crash, and higher-complication pieces from the Rotonde de Cartier line. Movements range from quartz to in-house automatics such as the 1847 MC and 1904 MC.

For Cartier, dealers check the exact reference, size and movement, since the same design often exists in small, medium and large, in quartz and automatic versions. Box, papers and service history matter, and so does the condition of the bracelet. On vintage pieces, especially from the London and Paris workshops, provenance and original dials are the main questions.
