What does “Deployant” mean?

Folding clasp used on straps instead of a pin buckle.

Also written as: Deployment clasp

Deployant, explained

A deployant, also called a deployment clasp, is a folding clasp used on leather, rubber or fabric straps in place of a traditional pin buckle. The strap stays fastened at a set length and the clasp folds open to slip the watch on and off, which reduces wear on the strap and lowers the risk of dropping the watch while putting it on.

Many brands sell their own deployants as optional or standard equipment on certain models, and a genuine deployant can add to a watch's appeal and resale value, particularly when it is in precious metal to match a gold case. When buying a watch said to come with a deployant, check the width matches the strap, the brand markings are correct and the hinges are tight. Aftermarket deployants are also common and should be described as fitting the brand, not as made by it.

A listing might read: “Comes on genuine leather strap with original steel deployant clasp, plus the original pin buckle.” Including both is a nice extra for buyers who prefer one or the other.
