What does “Clasp” mean?

The closing mechanism of a bracelet.

Clasp, explained

The clasp is the closing mechanism on a bracelet. Designs range from simple folding clasps to more complex versions with a safety lock and a built-in extension, such as Rolex's Glidelock and Easylink or similar systems from other brands that let you adjust the fit without tools.

Clasps matter more than many buyers expect. They usually take the most wear on a bracelet, so the clasp's polished surfaces are one of the first places to look when judging condition. Many brands also stamp codes inside the clasp, and on some Rolex bracelets these can help confirm that the bracelet's age is consistent with the watch. A clasp that is loose, does not close firmly or shows heavy wear can lower the value and may need replacing. On aftermarket bracelets, the clasp is often where quality falls short.

Typical listing details: “Clasp shows light desk-diving marks, closes firmly, Glidelock works as it should.” Buyers often ask for a close-up photo of the clasp before agreeing a price.
