About the GMT-Master family

The GMT-Master was developed in 1954 with Pan American Airways for crews flying between time zones. Ref. 6542 combined a 24-hour hand with a rotating 24-hour bezel, first in Bakelite and soon in aluminium, often in the red and blue colours later nicknamed Pepsi.

The ref. 1675, made from around 1959 to 1980, added crown guards and is the classic vintage version. The 16750 brought a quickset date, and the 16700 ran until 1999, when the GMT-Master gave way to the GMT-Master II. Gold and two-tone versions such as the 16758 and 16753 exist alongside steel. On vintage pieces, dealers look closely at the dial type, the bezel insert's condition and originality, and service replacement parts.
