About Panerai

Panerai began in 1860 as Giovanni Panerai's watch shop and workshop in Florence. In the first half of the 20th century the firm supplied precision instruments to the Royal Italian Navy, including luminous Radiomir paint and, from the late 1930s, large cushion-cased watches for navy divers. For decades its watches were made only for the military.

Panerai first sold watches to the public in 1993, and in 1997 the brand was acquired by the group that became Richemont, which moved production to Switzerland. The catalog covers the Luminor, with its crown-protecting lever, the Luminor Marina, Luminor Due, Radiomir, Submersible and Mare Nostrum, as well as the Florence-era pieces made before the acquisition.

Every Panerai has a PAM number, and a letter on the caseback shows the year of production. Dealers check the PAM number, the production letter, whether the movement is in-house (P. calibers) or based on an outside caliber, the original straps and buckle, and the box and papers. Limited editions and early Florence-era references draw particular interest among collectors.
