What does “Tropical” mean?
A dial that has faded from black to brown over decades.
Also written as: Tropical dial
Tropical, explained
A tropical dial is one that has changed colour over decades, usually from black to a shade of brown, from chocolate to light caramel. The change is generally attributed to the paint and its reaction to sunlight and other conditions over time.
Tropical dials are highly sought after by vintage collectors, particularly on certain sports models from major brands, because each one ages differently and attractive examples are rare. The colour should be even and the printing intact, and the lume should be consistent with the age of the watch. Because they are valuable, tropical dials are sometimes faked by deliberately ageing or repainting a dial, so provenance, consistent wear and inspection by a specialist are important. Photos can also exaggerate the effect, so buyers ask for images in natural daylight.
A typical listing: “Vintage Rolex GMT-Master with tropical dial, even chocolate brown, matching lume on dial and hands.” A buyer might request a daylight photo to judge the true colour.
