Service Parts, explained
Service parts are replacement components fitted by the brand, or by a watchmaker using brand parts, during a service. Common examples are service dials, hands, bezels, crowns and crystals. They are genuine parts, but they were not on the watch when it left the factory.
For modern watches, genuine service parts are normal and usually do not hurt value much. For vintage watches the story is different. Brands often replaced older dials and hands with newer versions, for example swapping parts that used older luminous material for ones with modern lume, and collectors generally prefer the originals. A vintage watch with a service dial and hands is usually worth noticeably less than the same watch with its original parts. Some owners keep the original parts after a service, which can help value if they are included.
Typical usage: “Rolex Submariner 5513 with service dial and hands from a brand service, originals not included.” Or more positively: “Comes with the original dial and hands, replaced during service, both included in the set.”
