Honest, explained
Honest, sometimes graded as good, describes a watch that is clearly worn but not abused. The wear is what you would expect for its age and use: scratches, light dings and a softened finish are present, but there is no serious damage and nothing has been bodged.
The word is common for vintage watches, where many buyers prefer an honest example with natural wear over one that has been heavily polished or restored to look new. For modern watches, honest condition usually means a lower price, and it can suit a buyer who wants a watch to wear without worrying about it. Dealers using the term should still be specific, noting any dings, scratches to the crystal, worn lume or bracelet stretch, and whether the watch has been serviced. Honest is about the wear, not about the watch's originality, which still needs to be confirmed separately.
A typical listing line: “Vintage Rolex Air-King, honest condition, original dial, scratches and small dings consistent with age, unpolished case.”
