Ghost Dial, explained

A ghost dial is a vintage dial that has faded almost completely, so that its original colour has turned very pale, often grey or washed-out. The term is less common than ghost bezel, which describes a faded bezel insert, but it follows the same idea: years of sunlight and other factors have drained the colour.

Like tropical dials, faded dials divide collectors. Some appreciate an evenly faded dial as a sign of genuine age with a distinctive look, while others prefer a dial that has kept its original colour. The fading should be even, and the printing and lume should still be in good condition. Buyers should be wary of dials that have been deliberately faded or chemically treated to imitate natural ageing, so the watch's history and an inspection by a specialist help.

Typical usage: “Vintage diver with ghost dial, evenly faded to light grey, printing intact, matching hands.” Because photos can exaggerate or hide fading, buyers often ask for daylight images.
