About Jaquet Droz

Jaquet Droz takes its name from Pierre Jaquet-Droz (1721–1790), the La Chaux-de-Fonds watchmaker famous for automata such as The Writer, which can still write with a quill today. The modern brand has belonged to the Swatch Group since 2000.

Its best-known design is the Grande Seconde, with an off-centre dial in which the hours and the large seconds form a figure of eight. The catalog lists the Grande Seconde, the Petite Heure Minute with miniature paintings and enamel, and the Automata watches with moving figures, in steel, red gold and white gold.

Many Jaquet Droz pieces are limited, with hand-painted or enamelled dials, so dealers check the number, the dial condition and the papers.
