About IWC

IWC Schaffhausen was founded in 1868 by Florentine Ariosto Jones, an American watchmaker from Boston who wanted to combine American production methods with Swiss craftsmanship, and chose Schaffhausen in north-eastern Switzerland for its water-powered energy. The full name, International Watch Company, reflects that origin. IWC has been part of the Richemont group since 2000.

The brand is known for its pilot's watches, from the Special Pilot's Watch of 1936 and the Big Pilot's Watch of 1940 to the Mark series, and for the Portugieser, whose large case grew out of a 1930s request for a wristwatch as precise as a marine chronometer. The catalog also covers the Ingenieur, Aquatimer, Portofino and Da Vinci lines. IWC's Pellaton winding system, developed in the 1950s, is still used in its larger in-house calibers.

IWC references start with IW followed by six digits, the first four identifying the model family. Dealers check the reference, whether the movement is in-house or based on an outside caliber, the box and warranty card and the condition of the strap or bracelet. Pilot's chronographs and Portugieser models are among the most traded.
