About Glashütte Original

Glashütte Original carries on watchmaking in the Saxon town of Glashütte, where the industry began in 1845. After German reunification the former state-owned watch company was privatised, and the Glashütte Original brand was established in the 1990s; it has belonged to the Swatch Group since 2000. The company makes its own movements and even its own dials, in a separate dial factory in Pforzheim.

Its watches show the Saxon school of watchmaking: three-quarter plates, Glashütte ribbing, blued screws and swan-neck fine adjustment. The brand is best known for its off-centre Pano dials and its Panorama Date, a large date display with two discs. The catalog covers the Pano family, the classic Senator, the retro Sixties and Seventies and the SeaQ dive watches.

A practical point for dealers: the start of a Glashütte Original reference contains the caliber number, so a reference such as 1-36-01 points to caliber 36. That makes it easy to check that the movement, dial and papers belong together. Buyers usually want the full set and a recent service, ideally from the brand.
