Step-by-step guide

It takes about 5 minutes, and you only do it once. Keep this page open next to Soda and follow along.

What is an authenticator app?

It’s a free app on your phone that shows a new 6-digit code every 30 seconds.

When you sign in to Soda, you type your password and then the code from your phone. Even if someone learns your password, they can’t get in without your phone.

Banks and email providers use the same kind of code. You set it up once; after that it takes a few seconds each time.

A new code appears every 30 seconds.
  1. Step 1

    Download a free authenticator app

On your phone, download Google Authenticator. It’s free.

Already have Microsoft Authenticator, 1Password or Authy? Those work too — use the one you have.

  2. Step 2

Open the set-up screen on Soda

Sign in to Soda on your computer if you can. You’ll be asked to set up two-step verification — tap “Set up two-factor authentication”. (You can also find it any time under Settings → Security.)

A square black-and-white code appears. That’s the QR code.

  3. Step 3

Scan the QR code with the app

Open Google Authenticator on your phone and tap the + button (or “Add a code”), then “Scan a QR code”.

Point your phone’s camera at the square code on your computer screen. The app adds “Soda” to its list straight away.

If the app asks to use your camera, tap Allow.

  4. Step 4

    Type the 6-digit code

Look at the app: next to “Soda” there’s a 6-digit code. Type it into Soda and tap Verify.

Spaces don’t matter. If the code changes while you’re typing, just use the new one.

  5. Step 5

    Save your backup codes

Right after, we show you 10 backup codes. Print them or download them and keep them somewhere safe at home or in the office.

Each backup code works once, instead of the app — for example if you lose your phone.

Only have one device? Setting up on your phone

You can’t scan a QR code that’s on the same phone. Instead, on the set-up screen:

Tap “Add to my authenticator app”. Your phone opens the app and adds Soda for you. Then go back and type the code.

Or tap “Copy key”, open the app, choose “Enter a setup key”, type Soda as the name, paste the key, and save.

Signing in from now on

Type your email and password as usual. When Soda asks for a 6-digit code, open the app on your phone and type the code shown next to “Soda”.

On your own computer you can tick “Remember this device”, so you’re asked for the code less often.

If something goes wrong

The code doesn’t work
Wait for the next code (they change every 30 seconds) and type it straight away. Still wrong? Open your phone’s settings and make sure the date and time are set automatically — the codes depend on the phone’s clock.
I can’t find the + button or the scanner
In Google Authenticator, the + is at the bottom right. In other apps look for “Add”, “Add account” or a QR-code symbol. Choose “Other account” if it asks what kind.
I got a new phone
Before you wipe the old phone, use the app’s “Transfer accounts” option, or sign in to Soda with the old phone and add the new one under Settings → Security → “Add backup authenticator”. Already gave the old phone away? Sign in with a backup code, then set the app up again on the new phone.
I lost my phone
On the code screen, tap “Having trouble?” and choose “Use a backup code”. No backup codes either? Choose “Request account recovery” — you send a selfie holding your ID and our team checks it’s you.
