What does “Pre-Owned Dealer” mean?
A dealer specialising in previously owned watches.
Pre-Owned Dealer, explained
A pre-owned dealer specialises in watches that have had a previous owner, from recent models with a few months of wear to vintage pieces decades old. They buy from private sellers and from the trade, assess condition and authenticity, often arrange servicing, and resell with their own warranty. 'Pre-owned' is the polite trade word for second-hand; 'vintage' usually means considerably older pieces, though there is no fixed cut-off.
What separates a good pre-owned dealer is how they handle condition and originality: whether parts are original, whether the case has been polished, whether service parts were fitted, and exactly what comes with the watch. Buyers often choose a pre-owned dealer over a private seller because of the dealer's authentication process, return policy and warranty. Many pre-owned dealers also sell unworn watches bought on the secondary market, so the line between a pre-owned dealer and a grey dealer is often blurred.
Example: 'Pre-owned 2019, light wear, never polished, papers included, covered by our 12-month warranty.'
